Three Things You Should Do After Moving to Canada

The benefits of emigrating to Canada are certainly well-known, so it’s little wonder that the Great White North is such a popular destination for migrants who travel from all over the world. If you’re a recent arrival to our fair nation, here are three things you should probably take care of sooner rather than later.

  1. Apply for the necessary government documents. This should really be at the top of any itinerary, really, as these are absolutely vital to have. As well as your permanent resident card, you’ll need a SIN (social insurance number) before you can get a job, and a government health insurance card to make sure you can get medical assistance if you need it.

  2. Obtain a Canadian driving license. If you plan to drive, that is. Licenses are handled by the provincial and territorial governments, so you should check the relevant resources to find out what you need to do – you may have to pass a written test, plus one or even two practical tests, so be prepared and study hard.

  3. Open a Canadian bank account. We all know that money makes the world go round, so it’s a good idea to make sure you’ve got somewhere secure to keep yours. The process is a painless one – all you need to do is visit a branch with two pieces of ID and take it from there.
